Empty Bowls Fundraiser

The 'Empy Bowls' fundraiser is a joint outreach of Religious Community Services and The Craven Arts Council of New Bern, NC. The event will be held on Thursday, February 10th from 11:00 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Temple Baptist Church, 1500 Kingdom Way in New Bern. Your ticket purchase of $20 entitles you to your choice of two bowls of soup prepared by participating area restaurants and churches along with bread and drink. During your time at the event, you will be able to pick out a pottery bowl, handmade by a local potter, to take home! Local musicians will entertain. It will be a fun, festive event! Tickets are availabe for purchase at the Bank of the Arts, 317 Middle Street, in historic, downtown New Bern.

A free lecture at the Tyron Palace Auditorium: "The Law is Too Slow: Lynching in North Carolina 1885 -1906" On Thursday, January 21, Dr. Parker will highlight the time from 1885 to 1906, when 43 people were lynched in North Carolina; 33 were black, while 10 were white. This number includes one female, lynched with three men between Pittsboro and Moncure, North Carolina in September, 1885. Though anti-lynching legislation was passed in 1893, no one was arrested for participating in mob action until 1906. This free lecture is at 7 p.m. in the Tryon Palace Visitor Center auditorium at the corner of George and Pollock streets. The public is encouraged to attend.
