Honor Flight on September 21, 2011
Posted by Florence Brewer on Monday, September 19th, 2011 at 10:10am.A third Honor Flight will depart from the Coastal Carolina Regional Airport in New Bern early morning, Wednesday, September 21st for a one day excursion to Washington, DC. On board will be 108 World War II veterans along with volunteer 'guardians'. Once in DC, these elderly service members will view and experience the magnificent World War II Memorial, which opened in 2004, and honors the 16 million who served in the US armed forces and the more than 400,000 who died.
Organized by the non-profit Honor Flight Southeastern North Carolina, the flights are a way for the American people to say 'Thank You' to our Word War II veterans. The flights are operated entirely by volunteers and the veterans are flown to Washington at no cost.
Upon their return to New Bern, a celebration is planned and will include the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing Band from Cherry Point and an admiring, patriotic crowd of civilians and current and former servicemen. More than 1500 people have gathered to welcome the veterans home after the last two Honor Flights. Organizers are inviting all to attend the event on September 21st by arriving by 7 p.m. The veterans are expected to arrive at the airport around 7:30 p.m.
Honor Flight of Southeastern North Carolina has sponsored two previous trips from New Bern, carrying 216 World War II veterans to tour Washington’s military monuments.
