Look What's Happening in New Bern During the Month of May!

On Saturday, May 1st, the New Bern Farmers Market celebrates 'Strawberry Day' featuring locally grown berries, tastings and recipes. Vendors will also be selling local produce, flowers, herbs, homemade breads, goat cheese products, arts and crafts by local artisans, the list just goes on! Stop by any Saturday 8:00 a.m til 1:00 p.m. Afterwards, visit Duffest at the Stanley White Recreation Center on Chapman Street.
In celebration of New Bern's 300th anniversary, there is plenty to do in May. Fun activities for military buffs include the 2010 Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point Air Show May 21 - 23 and Civil War re-enactors participating in a wide variety of events around New Bern May 6 - 9. And for those who love saddling up on a Harley, the Carolina Coast Harley-Davidson Dealer's Association Spring Rally takes place in New Bern May 14 - 15 at the Fairgrounds and a Bike Rally Block Party on Saturday, May 15. For the car enthusiasts, The Antique Automobile Club of American Grand National Meet will be take place on May 15 in Historic Downtown New Bern. Any you don't want to miss the canoe, raft and kayak racing on the Neuse River celebrating Neuse River Day on May 29 at Union Point Park.
If you're looking for something out of the ordinary, check out the "Haunted Evening" a performance of ghostly fun at the Attmore Oliver House on May 7. Also at the Attmore Oliver House on May 22, take the kids to the New Bern Bear Birthday Party with lots of games, activities and 'cub' cakes.
For music lovers, the North Carolina Symphony will perform American Classics at the Riverfront Convention Center on May 16. And don't miss The Southern Gentlemen Barbershop Chorus Tricentennial Show on May 8, the Havelock Heritage Music Blues Festival on May 8, and for some country and gospel music, the Bear City Opry at the Masonic Theatre on May 1 is the place to be. To round things out, check out 'Music in the Park' at Union Point Park on May 22 and the South Lawn Concert Series by the Craven Community Concert Band that takes place on the lawn of Tryon Palace Historic Sites and Gardens on May 23. Also at the Tryon Palace, take advantage of 'Free First Sundays' and enjoy the Palace Gardens free of charge on the first Sunday of the month through October.
And last but not least for the art lovers and theater goers, enjoy an evening of Art Openings and Meet the Artist events at various downtown New Bern galleries on May 14 during the ArtWalk. And May 5 through June 5, The Bank of the ARTS Juried Art Show will take place in downtown New Bern, a competition involving 140 North Carolina artists. And you just can't miss the New Bern Civic Theatre's production of '1776', a musical based on the events leading up to the writing and signing of the United States Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia - the local reviews have been great - showing now through May 22.
