Look What's Happening in New Bern During the Month of September!
Posted by Florence Brewer on Wednesday, August 25th, 2010 at 3:24pm.Kids are back in school, so September must be right around the corner! And there are lots of great things happening during the month of September in New Bern, NC for both kids and adults to enjoy.
You don't want to miss New Bern's 300th Anniversary Jubilee Weekend beginning Thursday, September 16th with the Opening of the Bern-New Bern Exhibit at the North Carolina History Education Center. This exhibit, which opened in the Historisches Museum Bern in December of 2009, will be traveling to New Bern from Switzerland. The exhibit leads the public through the history of New Bern in eleven scenes. Then at 8:30 p.m. that evening, find a spot and view the Jubilee Flotilla on the Trent River from the Eastern Carolina Yacht Club to Tryon Palace. On Friday, September 17,
the festivities continue with Picnic on the South Lawn of the Tryon Palace -bring your picnic to enjoy before the North Carolina Symphony performs a Symphonic Celebration at 5:30 p.m. (a ticketed event) followed by a Tribute Concert from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. And, of course, what's a celebration with out fireworks?? The Jubilee Fireworks begin on the lawn at 8:00 p.m. followed by the North Carolina Symphony Gala Dinner - another ticketed event - for reservations: email rsvp@newbern300.com. The Tryon Palace continues their Free First Sundays - the gardens are open to the public free of charge the First Sunday of September.
On September 10, 2010 - September 12, 2010 join in the Bike MS: Historic New Bern, an annual September event that draws thousands of cyclists, volunteers, family members and fans to New Bern each fall. For more information, visit Bike MS New Bern .
And for a step back in time, Tour the New Bern Academy on Monday, September 6th, while enjoying a conce
rt by the Tryon Palace Fife & Drum Corps and then watch the September 5, 1802 Stanly-Spaight Duel Reenactment unfold before your eyes. In this historical reenactment of the duel between Nineteenth-century New Bern political rivals, costumed characters battle to protect their reputation. The event is Free.
If you are an art lover or simply want to take an evening stroll in the downtown historic district, the ArtWalk Downtown New Bern on September 10, 2010 will feature local art, artists, live music and refreshments from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Visitors can stroll along a six-block area of Middle, Craven, Pollock, and East and South Front Streets where galleries and art stores remain open until 8 PM. And finally, the 2010 Carolina Chamber Music Festival begins with three concerts September 23rd, 25th and 26th and features a lineup of world-class musicians who appear internationally as soloists and are affiliated with leading ensembles including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston Pops, and the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra.
