Tuesday, April 26th, 2011 at 1:38pm. 309 Views, 0 Comments.
Well, here's another reason to move to New Bern. Sunday, April 17th, the "SPIDER LILY" sculpture was put in place behind the New Bern Riverfront Convention Center. The graceful 29-ft. sculpture was commissioned by local pediatric dentist Jim Congleton. The artist, Susan Pascal Beran, a renowned sculpture artist, created a fabulous symbol of New Bern's prized Spider Lily in full bloom. Legend has it that the red spider lily (Lycoris radiata var. radiata) was introduced to New Bern, NC in the 1850s when Navy Captain William Roberts brought lilies back from Japan to plant in his home garden in New Bern. After arriving in New Bern, the red spider lilies slowly began spreading across the US.
Ms. Beran, the sculpturer, has major works in large cities like…

The Jerkins-Duffy House, 301 Johnson Street, New Bern, NC ca. 1830

Another New Bern historic landmark home is now being offered by Coldwell Banker Willis-Smith for your consideration at $1,100,000. This large Federal-to-Greek sidehall frame house was constructed by Thomas Jerkins, a prominent merchant and ship owner, for his daughter on the occasion of her marriage in 1830. It remained in the Jerkins family until 1909 when the Duffy's, who were leaders in the local movement to reconstruct New Bern's Tryon Palace, bought the home. Their family maintained ownership until the mid 1990's. While the exterior of the home is quite simple, interior molding, elaborate pocket doors, large room sizes, and the lovely two-story porch makes this a home one of its kind. A handsome captain's walk spans the distance between the two…

I have been contemplating the first submission for our Coldwell Banker Willis-Smith blog. Why do we love living in New Bern? The answer is around us every day. Potential clients tell me weekly how much the Southern hospitality of our area takes them by surprise. It is only later in our conversation they hear of our diverse market with retirement, military, industry and tourism as a stable…
