What does New Bern have to offer in the way of children’s activities?

When I’m asked this question by a prospective buyer, I usually take a deep breath and say "Well there’s the Tryon Palace and, oh yeah, the Firemen’s Museum". Then silence...well I was tired of the silence so I started doing some research... and WOW, does New Bern have activities for children! Pump it Up - the new Inflatable Party Zone; they have classes to build motor skills as well as Jump and Art which combines art classes and playtime. Playdate – with ‘Drop in Child Care’ and ‘Parents Night Out’. Right next door to Pump It Up and Playdate is Sound Fitness & Golf which has an EcoFitness Kids - Power Hour every Tuesday after school for children ages 6-11. New Bern Parks and Recreation - they have a Directory of Facilities and Services that is well worth having in your possession. Twin Rivers YMCA - offers youth basketball and then there’s Youth Baseball - including Babe Ruth through the New Bern Parks and Recreation. On Deck Sports Center - Batting Cages and Personal Baseball Instruction. And the New Bern Area Soccer League.

There are also lots of local overnight camps including Camp Seafarer and Camp Seagull, Camp Don Lee, Camp Albemarle, and Camp Caroline. New Bern Craven County Library - they have summer reading programs and Storytime offered all year. Carriage Tours- have you seen the Cinderella Carriage? who wouldn't want to ride in that! Kidsville (Seth West Parrott Park) – a park constructed for kids –climbing, swinging and exploring. New Bern Gymnastics – classes for kids 18 months through 16 years. Courts Plus – offers a Sports Summer Camp for kids. Lowes’s Build and Grow – offers a free program held once a month for children grades 2 – 5 and Lowe’s provides the materials!

My gosh there's a lot of stuff for kids to do! New Bern Civic Theatre- offers summer programs for children. A Day at the Farm- tour a Historic Dairy Farm. Croatan National Forest - Walking Trails, Camping and Boating. Art Classes- Art and Materials – a great place for kids of all ages. Dance Studios- Several dance studios in the area offering Tap, Ballet and Jazz. Accidental Artist -Paint your own pottery. Movies - Both of New Bern's local Movie Theatres offer summer movies in the mornings at a discount - Southgate Cinema 6 and Neuse Boulevard Cinema.

And I can't forget The Strike Zone – with bowling and arcades. Kinston Indians Baseball – our own Minor League Baseball team. Moo Cow Café - 252-672-9269 – not just for the young, but the young at heart! Atlantic Beach and Fort Macon - How lucky are we!!! North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores – where kids can see thousands of aquatic animals, touch a stingray and look a shark in the eye.

AND FINALLY... Tryon Palace- offering a number of pint-sized programs designed to foster an interest in history, and the NC History Education Center set to open this year. And of course, the Firemen’s Museum- preserving the history of fire fighting in New Bern. I'm sure there are many more opportunities for kids in the area, but at least when I’m asked the inevitable question...I'll have an answer!!
