With New Bern celebrating 300 years in 2010, there are many great events taking place –below are some of the highlights – for a more complete list, go to visitnewbern.com or newbern300.com.

Pack up the kids and head to the 15th Annual Train Show in New Bern on Saturday, March 6th at New Bern High School – over 10 operating layouts, and vendors selling all types of railroad equipment.  Kids under 12 get free admission when accompanied by an adult.  For more information visit carolinacoastalrailroaders.org

Also on Saturday, March 6th, The Hope Clinic is hosting the Hope Ball – enjoy a great night for a great cause – dinner, auction and dancing at New Bern’s Riverfront Convention Center.  $70 per person.

Bowl for Kids’ Sake 2010 at the Strike Zone on March 6th is an annual fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southeastern NC. www.allaboutkids.kintera.org/

Girl Scouts of all ages can enjoy a fun-filled day touring the Tryon Palace on Saturday, March 6th - $10 per scout.

Doors open for the Bear City Opry Country & Gospel Music Show at the Masonic Theater on Hancock Street in New Bern at 6 pm on March 6th.  Hear music played the way you used to hear it on the grand ole opry.From March through October, spend the first Sunday afternoon of each month touring the gardens of Tryon Place in historic downtown New Bern FREE! 

The New Bern Historical Society is hosting a Lunch & Learn on Wednesday, March 10th at 11:30 a.m. at the Chelsea Restaurant.  James White III will portray the last Confederate solder being interviewed in this charming and often hilarious program.  Cost is $15 for members and $17 for non-members. 

Enjoy an evening of Art Openings and Meet the Artists during ArtWalk Downtown New  Bern on March 12th from 5 – 8 pm.   Refreshments will be available and the ArtWalk is FREE!  http://www.cravenarts.org/

And don’t miss the 2010 Spring Home & Garden Show at the New Bern Riverfront Convention Center on Saturday and Sunday, March 13th and 14th.  Admission is FREE to this event designed for homeowners in all stages of remodeling, landscaping and decorating their homes.  www.encshows.com 

The Tryon Palace is presenting a Civil War weekend concentrating on the Union occupation of New Bern and the civilian aspect of the Civil War.  The event is titled ‘A Union City in the Midst of the Confederacy’ and takes place from March 13th through the 15th.  Living history programs will highlight the lives of New Bernians under Union occupation.  Tickets are $15 for adults and $6 for students and are valid for the weekend. 

 

In continuing with the Civil War Theme, the Tryon Palace in New Bern will also present “African Americans in Civil War North Carolina and a Southern Woman’s Perspective of Reconstruction” on Thursday, March 18th.  Admission is FREE.
