New Bern Neighborhoods

New Bern neighborhoods come in a wide variety of choices, from 18th-and 19th-century homes in the downtown historic district ($100,000 to $750,000) to riverfront and golf course living in planned communities. Below is a brief description of neighborhoods in and around
the New Bern area.

Downtown Historic District
The charming downtown Historic District offers homes varying from cozy cottages to imposing three-story waterfront homes dating from the1750s. Many Federal and Georgian-style homes fill the tree-lined streets. Homes in the district have restrictive agreements with the New Bern Preservation Foundation to protect their architectural integrity. The downtown area provides a scenic place to shop, stroll, and dine for both residents and visitors. The downtown district thrives on its small-town charm and timeless appeal.

Ghent
A historic area that was added to the National Register in 1983, the Ghent District is a mix of homes dating from the 1930s.  The friendly atmosphere of Ghent is accented by a beautifully landscaped streets and large, open porches on cozy bungalow and cottage style homes.  The neighborhood is close to New Bern’s YMCA, the baseball fields at Fort Totten Park, and Lawson Creek Park, which offers fishing, nature trails, boat launches and a picnic area.

Riverside
Through the efforts of the Preservation Foundation, many of the notable turn-of-the-century homes in the Riverside area have been lovingly restored. Highlighted by a mix of architectural styles, including stately Victorian homes, spacious bungalows and waterfront ranch homes, Riverside has been recognized as a Historic Neighborhood on the National Register.

Derby Park
Derby Park is one of New Bern’s most popular communities. Situated on almost 400 acres, its growth has been steady and continuous. Home styles are varied in design, open spaces abound, and the original theme shows up on community pavilions and signage. And all located just minutes from shopping, schools, the hospital, and the Emerald Golf Course.

Taberna
Taberna, a planned golf community, is located just five miles east of downtown New Bern. This community is a haven for golf lovers, and has a full service clubhouse with a pro shop and dining facility. Taberna’s 800 home sites include single family homes, patio homes, and townhouses which are nestled between a host of natural areas, including gently rolling hills, lakes and wetlands, trails and even a canoe dock.

Sellhorn Heights
This new community is bounded on one side by Taberna and just down the street from Carolina Colours.  Within a laid back rural setting, homes start at prices far less than its neighbors. Just minutes from downtown, in the Brinson school district, Sellhorn is also very convenient to Havelock and Cherry Point.  With the completion of the new course at Carolina Colours, three golf courses will be less than 10 minutes away.

Greenbrier
Greenbrier is a wonderful neighborhood for families with young children and retirees.  This community features homes designed for today’s lifestyles including lakefront and golf course property. Greenbrier features an18-hole championship golf course designed by Rees Jones, as well as a clubhouse that includes an Olympic-size pool and tennis courts. The community is also just moments from New Bern’s shopping, schools and medical facilities, and it is adjacent to Craven Community College.

Carolina Colours
Now under development, Carolina Colours will be a pedestrian-friendly neighborhood that is comprised of public spaces, retail, education and recreational area, and traditional styled and urban residential neighborhoods.  Located a few miles east of New Bern, Carolina Colours will offer the feel of a small town with nearly 2000 home sites that include a mix of traditional single-family homes, cottages, and townhomes.  This community will be a great place to live, work and play, with an 18-hole golf course, an activity center with fitness, swim and tennis facilities, a Towne Center and several natural areas.

Trent Woods
Although know for its waterfront property along the Trent River, Trent Woods offers homes in all price ranges.  Homes within this lovely community feature varied architectural styles, built with families in mind.  The mature, lush landscaping adds to the overall beauty of this community. Trent Woods is home to the New Bern Golf and Country Club, the Eastern Carolina Yacht Club and Meadows Family Park.

Fairfield Harbour
New Bern’s only gated, resort community, Fairfield Harbour is situated just a few miles outside of New Bern and features access to the Neuse River. The community’s single family homes, condominiums and townhomes are situated on golf course, waterfront and wooded lots. This unique community offers two 18-hole golf courses, a country club, two pro shops, two marinas, tennis courts and indoor and outdoor pools.  Fairfield Harbour also offers a variety of activities including men’s and women’s golf associations, quilting, weaving, gardening, book clubs, and RV, tennis and yacht clubs, to name a few.

Brices Creek
The Brices Creek area, located southwest of New Bern, is bordered by the Croatan National Forest and the Trent River.  Recent growth in this area has been embraced by homeowners looking for a private, country setting.  Comprised of many newer subdivisions, Brices Creek offers various architectural styles on wooded and waterfront lots. This location also provides quick access to downtown New Bern. 

Hunters Ridge
Hunters Ridge is a custom-home community located near Brices Creek and just a few minutes from downtown New Bern. Crump Woods
