Welcome to Historic New Bern

Welcome to Historic New BernIn the late 1600s, a group of Swiss and German emigrants decided the destiny of a faraway place. Having heard about the natural attractions of a very special area in the colonies, they traveled all the way from Europe to see for themselves. Upon arrival, they concurred that there could be no better place for a permanent settlement. So they stayed, founded a town, and named it New Bern.

  • Although chosen by the royal governor to be the colonial capital in 1766, New Bern soon became a hub of patriotic fervor in the quest for independence. In 1774, a public meeting of patriots was held, in open defiance of royal orders. The American Revolution began in earnest shortly thereafter.
  • In 1791, President George Washington made a special visit to New Bern. He enjoyed his visit so well, he stayed two pleasant nights, guest in the home of noted patriot and privateer, John Wright Stanly. On his last night in town, President Washington was entertained in style at a banquet and ball held at Tryon Palace.
  • In 1862, the Union Army came to New Bern. Following a fierce battle and successful capture of the town, the Yankees concluded that New Bern would make an ideal regional headquarters. They settled in and remained there for the rest of the war.
  • New Bern's location at the confluence of two rivers is no accident. When the Chattawka Indians held special tribal councils, they met where the two great rivers unite. And when their chief, King Taylor, met with Baron de Graffenried to negotiate the purchase of land destined to become New Bern, it was also at the same site.

Since its founding in 1710, New Bern has continued to be the perfect meeting destination for all sorts of groups. Those natural attractions are still alluring. But now New Bern has even more to offer groups who want to combine a successful business meeting with fun and relaxation.

Luxury hotels and cozy bed & breakfast. A vibrant downtown area featuring historic sites and unique attraction. A region boasting the best that nature has to offer...forest, rivers, beaches, and stunning sunsets. Exceptional golf facilities and other recreational opportunities. Meeting facilities offering first-class service. And of course, a generous helping of southern hospitality served up to each and every visitor.
