Historic Homes
Dowtown New Bern Historic
The charming downtown Historic District offers homes varying from cozy cottages to imposing three-story waterfront homes dating from the 1750s. Many Federal and Georgian-style homes fill the tree-lined streets. Homes in the district have restrictive agreements with the New Bern Preservation Foundation to protect their architectural integrity. The downtown area provides a scenic place to shop, stroll, and dine for both residents and visitors. The downtown district thrives on its small-town charm and timeless appeal.
Ghent Historic
A historic area that was added to the National Register in 1983, the Ghent District is a mix of homes dating from the 1930s. The friendly atmosphere of Ghent is accented by beautifully landscaped streets and large, open porches on cozy bungalow and cottage style homes. The neighborhood is close to New Bern’s YMCA, the baseball fields at Fort Totten Park, and Lawson Creek Park, which offers fishing, nature trails, boat launches and a picnic area.
DeGraffenreid Historic
Just north of the Ghent neighborhood lies Degraffenreid Park, named in honor of Christophe Degraffenreid, a Swiss baron that led settlers to New Bern in 1710. Homes in Degraffenreid offer unique designs including Federal Style homes with gracious columns and situated on spacious lots. Wrought iron fences, brick walls and lovingly cared for landscapes grace the neighborhood's homes.
Riverside Historic
Through the efforts of the Preservation Foundation, many of the notable turn-of-the-century homes in the Riverside area have been lovingly restored. Highlighted by a mix of architectural styles, including stately Victorian homes, spacious bungalows and waterfront ranch homes, Riverside has been recognized as a Historic Neighborhood on the National Register.
