The Southern Surprise
Nestled at the confluence of two of the South's loveliest rivers, New Bern surely qualifies as one of the most pleasant surprises in the South, if not the nation. This scenic waterfront town is rich in history with more than 150 landmark homes and buildings. There are several marinas, excellent hospital and healthcare facilities, good schools, quaint shops and restaurants, plus museums, art galleries, theater and festivals. Although small - the metropolitan area numbers about 45,000 - New Bern has a surprisingly sophisticated manufacturing base (Bosch and Moen are major employers), along with a wealth of recreational opportunities, and a quality of life that is truly unique.
Founded in 1710, New Bern was the colonial capital of North Carolina and home to Tryon Palace and Gardens, and was the birthplace of Pepsi-Cola. This charming city has long been a destination for tourists. New Bern has a myriad of homes dating to the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries which have been lovingly restored to their previous grandeur. Chrysanthemums blaze across the landscape in the fall, and the almost continuous splash of azaleas and dogwoods in the spring are breathtaking.
New Bern also attracts large numbers of retirees looking for a mild climate with which to enjoy the many outdoor recreational opportunities. Sailors and fisherman ply the waters in the Neuse River and nearby Pamlico Sound twelve months of the year. The graceful Trent River is a water skier's delight. There are public, private and semi-private golf courses from which to choose in and surrounding New Bern.
Military, both active and retired, make New Bern their home because of its proximity to Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point.
Festivals and cultural events are practially perpetual. Just walking down the quaint tree-lined streets of New Bern is a great way to spend the day. A warm welcome awaits those who come, whether they come for a day or a lifetime. The only thing that isn't surprising is the "southern hospitality" which is as present today as it was in the 18th century!
