Oriental
Sailing Capital of North Carolina
Located in Pamlico County, not far from where the Neuse River connects with the Pamlico Sound, the village of Oriental is aptly referred to as the sailing capital of North Carolina. Oriental offers residents and visitors modern conveniences blended with miles and miles of beautiful shorelines, water access and wildlife. The Neuse River is 5 miles wide, offering endless water views, unmatched anywhere on the Eastern Carolina Coast. The area is also ideal for kayaks and canoes with a myriad of creeks and bays catering to all skill levels.
Although originally names Smith Creek and settled in the early 1700s, the town was named Oriental in 1886 at the suggestion of the wife of Oriental's founder and first postmaster. She saw the name on the transom nameboard of a steamship that sank off Hatteras in 1862. The nameboard washed ashore and was displayed in a residence in Manteo, NC where she was visiting.
Incorporated in 1899, today it is estimated that the town is home to some 900 permanent residents and roughly 2,700 sailboats, sport fishing boats and commercial trawlers.
Connected by a short channel to the Intracoastal Waterway, Oriental has earned a reputation as a popular stop on this well-traveled route. The town itself has a unique charm and is home to many local artists, quaint shops, and restaurants serving local seafood. In addition to some of the East Coast's finest sailing, the town of Oriental hosts the Oriental Cup Regatta, the Croaker Festival, and the Spirit of Christmas.
Waterfront cottages, Victorian homes, marina villages and gated communities can all be found in and around Oriental. Residents can enjoy the laid back, coastal lifestyle that features a mild four-season climate. Our boating season never ends!
