New Bern
If you're looking to attend services or simply explore some of New Bern's historic churches, you'll have plenty of choices. All major Protestant religions, as well as the Catholic and Jewish faiths are represented and many have long-established churches in New Bern.
Many of New Bern's oldest churches are located in the downtown historic district and their distinctive architecture only adds to the city's beautiful skyline. Within a very short distance you can tour several churches.
At the corner of Middle and Pollock Streets, Christ Episcopal Church's Gothic Revival bell tower and spire, which soars 150 feet, has dominated the skyline of the city of New Bern for more than 125 years. The parish is the oldest in New Bern and one of the oldest in North Carolina and on the National Register of Historic Places.
Also on Middle Street, the First Baptist Church was founded in 1809 and the church was completed in 1848. The church's gothic revival style of architecture features red brick walls which are 18 inches thick. The church is also on the National Register of Historic Places.
First Presbyterian Church on New Street, was built in 1819 and features a pipe organ built and installed by C.B. Fish, Inc. of Gloucester, Massachusetts. The 1,012 pipes are housed in a poplar case painted white and trimmed with Honduras mahogany. The pipe shades are carved with shells and other nautical motifs representing the link between New Bern and the water.
A short walk down the street is the Centenary United Methodist Church which was first organized in 1772; the current church was completed in 1905. During the holidays, the church presents a full performance of Handel's Messiah by a community choir of voices and soloists accompanied by the North Carolina Symphony.
St. Paul's Catholic Church, the oldest Catholic parish in North Carolina, originally built its first church on Middle Street in 1840 and it is open to the public during the day. Its current home on Country Club Road was constructed in 1986 and is adjacent to St. Paul's Education Center, a private school.
Also in the New Bern area, there are six historic black churches that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places: St. Cyprian's Episcopal Church, Ebenezer Presbyterian Church, Rue Chapel A.M.E. Church, St. John's Missionary Baptist Church, First Missionary Baptist Church and St. Peter's A.M.E. Zion.
Temple B'nai Sholem a Reform Jewish Congregation is located in a beautiful neoclassical-designed synagogue which was built in 1980 on Middle Street by its congregation, which was originally organized about 1824. The synagogue is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
