Mason House was designed by architects Arthur Rotch and George Thomas Tilden and constructed circa 1883 for Mr. & Mrs. William Powell Mason. Under the stewardship of the Mason's daughter, Fanny Peabody-Mason, the property developed a rich history. Miss Mason was well known as an active patron of music in the United States and abroad. In 1891, the first of Miss Mason's regular music salons was inaugurated in the magnificent music room.
