Shipping container storage unit is just that, 2 shipping containers we purchased used & placed approx. 16 feet apart and built a roof over the open space and used a heavy duty tarp to cover the opening. We would say it is still open to but protected from the elements & works well for items that do not need the security or protection of a full garage. The main home: electric is provided by batteries charged by the solar panels (iron phosphate batteries, new in 2024-very safe/stable w/ expected 10-15 yr life, NOT lithium ion) w/ propane generator back up in case the sun doesn?t show up for a few day or times of high power usage. Heat via wall & floor mounted propane heaters so you can keep the cabin heated even when you are not there. We generally keep the cabin at around 50 degrees during the winter when we are not there. During the summer months, we use one window air unit in the loft window (we will leave it) and find that with the vaulted ceiling fan on, it enough to cool the house to our liking. We do not heat either the log cabin or the garage when we are not staying on property. The Chippewa Fire lane is maintained by the township & serves as a road as well as part of the 4-wheel and snowmobile trail systems.
