Sean Murphy

Sean Murphy is a hands-on rates and foreign exchange sales professional leading both a team of account managers as well as having direct account coverage of sell-side, buy-side, and proprietary trading customers. Customers served include global money center banks, hedge funds, and HFT market. Sean was an integral part of the original management team that brought BrokerTec from being a concept of a consortium of 14 money center banks to being the dominant platform in the U.S. Treasury marketplace culminating in the sale to the CME Group in 2018 for $5.4B. His mandate included leading a global sales team of 20 people located in Asia, Europe, and North America that managed a 23-hour, 5 days-a-week platform that grew from being a start-up to the market leading platform in trading U.S. Treasuries. In less than 20 years, BrokerTec’s market share went from zero to over 90% by delivering technology solutions that allowed these firms to expedite trading, risk management, compliance, and operational performance.
Following the successful sale, in his most recent role as an Executive Director running sell-side sales for the CME, his directive was to integrate the existing CME sell-side sales team with the BrokerTec and EBS team in order to broaden the widening scope of both OTC traded products with their complementary exchange traded products. Each team member had to broaden their understanding of U.S. Treasuries, foreign exchange, and futures markets and how each of these markets interacted with each other. With Sean’s direction and leadership, the team had to engage all facets of the account from trading desk heads to operational and business leaders. Also, analysis of each accounts’ activity was reported internally to identify untapped opportunities where the CME value proposition could be established bringing added benefit to the client and the CME simultaneously.
Prior to joining BrokerTec, Sean held several positions with a number of money center banks and global brokerage firms.
Sean holds an MBA from Rutgers Graduate School and a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from Georgetown University as well as a Series 7 and 63 license.
