You will hear bikes going by before you finish unpacking. Main Street is a walk from the front door, brick and stone storefronts with slate walks and deep porches on the side streets, and plenty of houses as old as this one. The farmers market sets up on the Government Center lawn on Fridays from 9 to 3, May into October. Dinner is Limoncello at the Orange Inn when you want a tablecloth, or Delancey's on Park Place when you want a stool and a burger after a day of demo. The library keeps a local history room, museum passes and a Library of Things, and you will borrow from it more than you expect to. The calendar takes care of itself. The Mid-Hudson St. Patrick's Parade fills the streets in March, and the Fourth of July brings the Great American Weekend and racing at the Historic Track, where harness horses have been running since 1838. Manhattan is 60 miles east. Campbell Hall station is about 15 minutes for the Port Jervis line, Route 17 is minutes out, and Stewart International is about 25. Day to day, ownership is straightforward. Natural gas heat, municipal water and municipal sewer, so the utilities are the ordinary kind and anything you open up, you opened on purpose. This house has stood on this lot since 1820. It has been looked after and lived in all that while, and what it needs now is somebody with the eye to see it finished and the nerve to start. A year from now you will be pulling in at dusk, lights on across three buildings, two of them earning while you eat dinner in the third, and every bit of it yours.
