Hello, my name is Sarah Verlinich, and ever since I was a little girl, I’ve admired every house I’ve ever seen. I grew up in a small two-bedroom home in Ingram, PA. It wasn’t much, but it was ours. My parents got married in the backyard in the 1980s, and my dad raised five kids under that roof. That house was full of life, love, and memories. Even today, I can picture every crack and blemish in the walls—it will always live in my heart. In the 1990s, I remember sitting in front of the TV, replaying house listings on cable over and over again. Back when brokerages showcased homes on television, I was completely fascinated. Every home felt like a door opening to new possibilities. I was curious then, and I still am now. When I turned 18, everything changed. My dad became very sick, and we lost our childhood home. We moved into my grandma’s two-bedroom house in the Windgap area of Pittsburgh. My twin sister Nicole and I didn’t even have a bedroom—our dad finished the basement, and we shared a futon. We never complained… well, maybe a little—but we kept going. About a year later, my sister had her son Nicholas, and suddenly there were three of us living in that basement. We knew something had to change. When my twin sister Nicole was 22, she received a large tax refund for being a young mom. Instead of spending it, we made a decision that changed our lives—we used it to buy our very first home on a quiet cul-de-sac in Elliott, PA. It felt like a fresh start. A chance to rebuild what we had lost and create new memories.
