Historic Thomas Law House on the Market for $2.5M

WASHINGTON, D.C. – (July 13, 2017) – A historic home, known as the Thomas Law House, has just listed for $2.5 million. The property was famously occupied by Thomas Law and Elizabeth Parke Custis, the granddaughter of Martha Washington.

Newlywed Law and Custis resided in the home for three months immediately after its construction while their own home was being built, giving the property the nickname, ‘The Honeymoon House’. The estate was later converted into a hotel during the Civil War, then transformed again into a hospital and medical clinic. The Thomas Law House was named to the National Register of Historic Places in the 1970s.

The home, located at 1252 6th Street SW, dates back to 1794. The property was built by James Greenleaf and rests near the Washington Channel. Many of the home’s original details are still intact today, including original hardwood floors throughout, original crown molding, two fireplaces, the exterior architecture and a section of the original cobblestone streets from the 1700s in front of the home.

The property is part of the Tiber Island Cooperative, providing the new home owner with access to the co-op amenities. Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage’s Emanuel Williams and John Edelmann are the property listing agents.

Additional property details include:

  •          Four bedrooms and one and-a-half bathrooms
  •          Apartment with one bedroom and one bathroom
  •          4,050-square-feet of living space
  •          Four kitchens
  •          Terrace overlooking the Washington Channel
  •          Pool
  •          Two parking spaces with option to purchase third space

QUOTE:

“The property has changed functionality several times over its 200-year lifetime, so there’s a very full history of events that comes with the home,” said Williams. “Aside from its intriguing past, the home’s location in the Southwest quadrant is seeing rapid new commercial and residential development, particularly with the Wharf development right next door and the Mead Center at Arena Stage.”
