1870s Historic Rowhouse Was Site of Film “Heartburn”

The rowhouse went under contract less than one week after hitting the market and sold above the listing price

WASHINGTON, D.C. (November 22, 2016) – A historic home dating back to 1870 has just sold for $1.325 million, up from the $1.299 million listing price. The classic Italianate rowhouse was a location for the 1986 film, “Heartburn”, starring Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep. In the film, the characters renovate the historic Washington, D.C. property while settling into married life.

Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage’s Grant, Ryall & Andrew Group represented the sellers at 327 A Street SE.

This residence’s construction precedes the neighboring Library of Congress, which opened its doors in 1897. The home’s Capitol Hill neighborhood was one of the first to develop around the Capitol, which rapidly expanded in the mid-19th century with both residential and monumental development. Italianate architectural design, seen in this home, was prominent in the early 19th century when many area rowhouses were constructed surrounding the Capitol.

“It’s incredible to consider the history behind this home,” said Ryall Smith. “It’s been meticulously maintained through the decades but also offers modern-day updates. Buyers in the area clearly saw the value in the property and we had three offers on the home in less than one week.”

The residence offers two levels of living space with plenty of natural light throughout. Additional property details include:

  • Three bedrooms, two full bathrooms and two partial bathrooms
  • 2,200 square-feet of living space
  • Tall ceilings and hardwood floors throughout
  • Spacious kitchen with stainless steel appliances, granite counters and oversized sliding doors leading to the patio
  • Storage basement
  • Patio/garden space with privacy fence and landscaping
